Not wanting to stand still, July sees more development to Mendip Shooting Ground.
Anyone wondering why there was a digger on the VITASC layout, we can confirm that we are installing an OTR (Olympic Trap) system on the VITASC layout. (For anyone not familiar with OTR click HERE ). Time frame for completion around 6 weeks.
The dry weather has finally allowed concrete re-laying in front of the main entrance to the clubhouse in order for a porch to be constructed, in readiness for the howling winds of winter! (Clearly not needed this week!!). Also the blockwork can now commence at the far end full bore rifle tunnel, to house the targets, backstop and range equipment. The time frame for this, all being well and subject to weather conditions, is end September / early October. We will issue the criteria for using the full-bore rifle range in due course.
Mendip Guns and Leisure.
We are sorry to see Mendip Guns and Leisure leave Mendip shooting Ground at the end of July 2018. We have enjoyed our relationship with them and wish them all the best for the future.

Ladies shooting is one of the fastest growing areas of the sport and we regularly get asked about how to get into what is often seen as a predominantly male activity. We suggest that people contact established groups such as Somerset Lady Guns, Femmes Fatale and the Shotgun and Chelsea Bun Club, all of whom are real devotees and work tirelessly to promote all aspects of shooting to experienced and new shooters. However, if you have no experience and really don’t know what it’s all about, even the basics, the thought of joining a group for many can be a daunting prospect and one, for whatever reason, that is not followed up.
We often hear:
“I would if I knew a bit more about it”,
“I would if I knew someone else that was going”,
“I know they will be friendly, but I don’t really want anything too formal or competitive”,
“I want to be able to come up to the shooting ground and know some of the other ladies that shoot and at the same level as me”,
“I want to get some lessons before I shoot with other people”,
“I don’t have a shotgun or certificate”,
“I don’t have all the gear and don’t know where to start”,
“I can only shoot at weekends”,
“My husband is worried that I’ll be better than him!!!”
These are all very understandable reasons for not joining a more formal group of shooters, so this is where Mendip Shooting Ground comes in.
- To welcome all lady shooters to Mendip Shooting Ground regardless of ability.
- To assist in the learning of safe gun handling and shooting as well as some of the jargon!
- To advise on obtaining a gun licence and purchasing a gun
- To introduce those who have never shot before to the sport and give them the confidence to come to the shooting ground, learn to shoot safely, have a go, and learn what it’s all about alongside others keen to get into the sport.
- To encourage current lady guns, who want to enjoy the company of other lady guns, to meet and shoot at Mendip Shooting Ground.
- To assist all ladies to progress with their shooting and introduce different disciplines, eg. DTL, Skeet, FITASC, English Sporting.
- Introduce shooters to the main representative bodies of the sport, BASC and CPSA
- Advise on game shooting and safe shooting in the field, as well as an insight to country sports.
- To encourage like minded people to enjoy shooting in a friendly, safe environment.
New Clubhouse, Shooters Rest Restaurant, Indoor Air Rifle Range and Conference facilities Opened.
Mendip Shooting Ground celebrated the opening of it's new purpose built Clubhouse, Restaurant, Indoor Air Rifle Range and Conference facilities over the weekend of the 23rd and 24th September 2017.
After much debate over the last few weeks as to which "celebrity" was going to cut the ribbon the honour fell to Alex Hill.
After two years of hard work by many people (or as Vernon put it "there are too many people to thank for getting us to this point, but you all know who you are"), the ribbon was cut and the Clubhouse was "officially" open.
